2 Simple Methods to Make Yerba Mate
Are you interested in drinking yerba mate but put off by the complicated brewing method? That’s how I felt several years ago when I wanted to start drinking yerba mate as a way to cut back on coffee. I wasn’t interested in the traditional aspects of how to brew it. I just wanted to drink it! Here’s the two methods that I have successfully used to brew yerba mate over the past couple of years.
The easiest way to make yerba mate at home without having to purchase anything is to use your regular drip coffee maker. Simply put a few scoops of yerba mate into a coffee filter, put it in the basket, add water and push the button. It’s simple to do and is exactly the same as brewing a pot of coffee. Of course, there are a few drawbacks to making mate this way.
The first is that some coffee taste might make it’s way into your tea. Everything needs to be really clean to prevent this. Secondly, it can be hard to get the strength right as you probably don’t want to make an entire pot every time. It can take a lot of trial and error to get the mate to taste the way you want. The third problem is that you can’t adjust the water temperature when using a coffee maker.
The second brewing method is the one that I think is best and use everyday. That’s by using a coffee press. Also known as a french press, plunger press or Bodum. This method allows you to easily control the brewing strength and water temperature. Just put a couple tablespoons of yerba mate in the bottom of the press and then add hot water. Then let it sit for your desired brewing time and push down the plunger. Brewing strength can be adjusted by waiting longer to push the plunger down. You can even buy mugs and large tumblers that have a filter and press built right in. This is great for taking your yerba mate on the road or at the office.
Yerba mate is a fantastic daily beverage and can be a great choice for anyone looking to cut back on their coffee consumption. Don’t let the purists put you off with complicated brewing methods. Either of these simple methods will give you a great cup. Enjoy!
